President’s Message

I know what you’re thinking, CALL Members:

Twelve. More. Months.

 TWELVE. MORE! MONTHS!

But term limits exist for a reason, so with that in mind, and with tears on my keyboard, I type to you one last time as CALL President.

I am so proud of our accomplishments as an organization in the past year. While I am unable to recount all of the moments that defined my year as President, the standout event for me was our 75th Anniversary event at the Columbia Yacht Club last June. Not only was it a beautiful day filled with great food and conversation–it was also our first opportunity to gather together in person since before the COVID pandemic. May Business Meeting – Judge Jesse G. Reyes

The May meeting kicked off at 11:30 am with early attendees networking.  68 people registered for the event, including new members Kamilah Wentworth and Katie Leonard.  The event was sponsored by S&P Global.  Representatives Tim Gilroy & Cortland Martin were present.  Lexis provided the door prizes.  Tim Koppang from Lexis attended. Spring 2023, Community Service

Community Service Committee – Cradles to Crayons

In conjunction with the February Business Meeting, the CALL Community Service Committee coordinated a volunteer clothes-sorting outing at Cradles to Crayons on Saturday March 11th with CALL members Brandy Ellis, Mandy Lee, Beth Schubert, Stacia Stein, Leah Whitesel, and Mike McMillan attending.

Special thanks to Chicago-Kent Law students Shabnam Mahammadli and Khrystna Slyusarchuk for joining us as well as the team at Cradles to Crayons for providing great guidance in a fun environment.  We also raised money to support Open Books. Coroner Research Fee Reduction Bill Passes Illinois General Assembly

On May 8th this year, SB 686, the coroner fee reduction bill, passed both the Illinois House of Representatives and Senate and was sent to the Governor on June 6th.  Three days later on June 9th, Governor JB Pritzker sign the bill into law as PA 103-73, effective January 1 2024.

The newly signed legislation has two main provisions—1) provides that the fees for a copy of a transcript of testimony of a coroner’s inquest over 20 years old declaring the request is for research or genealogy purposes is a flat rate of $15.00; and 2) provides that, a coroner may waive, at his or her discretion, any coroner fees for those who are indigent or under other special circumstances.
