CALL Volunteers Help GCFD to Wrap up 2021
The Greater Chicago Food Depository (GCFD) is Chicago’s food bank and partners with over 700 local agencies and food assistance programs, including pantries, soup kitchens and shelters for children, older adults and veterans to fight hunger.
They rely on volunteers to repackage bulk amounts of food into smaller, shareable quantities that can be distributed throughout the Chicagoland area and Cook County.
On December 4, 2021, five (5) CALL members volunteered at the GCFD to do just that. Continue reading CALL Volunteers Help GCFD to Wrap up 2021
Committee Roundup: Community Service Montrose Beach Cleanup
October 9th was a beautiful sunny day in Chicago. On that day eight CALL volunteers assembled at Montrose Beach with our garbage bags and rubber gloves and got down to business collecting trash. And there was plenty of garbage to be found, unfortunately. As we walked along the waterfront, everything from food wrappers and pieces of broken toys to Bulls baseball hats and cell phone accessories mingled with the sand and surf. Small bits of plastic are a disproportionately large pollution hazard that can travel well beyond the lakefront shore when wildlife fatally ingest them. Our group sent at least eight garbage bags of trash off to the landfill, a great start to getting some of the mess contained for proper disposal. Volunteer Opportunities at AALL Chicago 2016
Do you like to greet visitors and make them feel welcome? Do you like to guide others to local restaurants? Do you like to staff the hospitality booth? Or do you prefer to help out behind the scenes with fellow librarians?
Chicago is the host city for the American Association of Law Libraries Annual Meeting and Conference in July 2016 and there will be a variety of opportunities for you to help out. We will be sending more specific requests in the new year but, in the meantime, if you want to get on our VOLUNTEERS list now, please send your name to either Carolyn Hersch (chersch@ngelaw.com) or Claire Toomey Durkin (8durkin@jmls.edu).
CALL-ing All Volunteers
Do you like telling people about your career and how interesting law librarianship is? Do you have a project coming up this spring requiring a free extra helping hand?
Many of the library and information science schools near Chicago have an alternative spring break week. During the semester’s scheduled spring break, students come to all types of libraries in Chicago and the suburbs. The MLS candidates shadow librarians and/or assist on projects in the various library settings.
This is obviously a rewarding opportunity for the MLS candidate. S/he can see the day-to-day of the work and better determine what is his/her best library type and librarian type fit.
It can also be rewarding for you. You will get some help with that project gathering dust in the corner. Everyone has one of these, right? You will learn about what is new in technology, procedures and models for libraries. Perhaps by talking with this student you will learn a new way to promote and distribute eBooks in your library or find a better newsletter distribution process. We can always benefit from learning new ideas and new ways of approaching our work.
In an effort to share our love for law librarianship with others, the CALL Placement and Recruitment Committee is seeking volunteers to host an MLS candidate for a week or maybe just a day to two in the Spring of 2015. Please contact us if you are intrigued, ready or have more questions.
