Would You Like To Play CALL-er I.D.?

For those of you who were not able to attend this year’s AALL Annual Meeting in San Antonio, CALL once again had a respectable showing in the ever-important Chapter Showcase section of the Exhibit Hall.  This is prime real estate, and The CALL PR/Internet Committee has made it our mission these past couple of years to make sure everyone who passes by the CALL table leaves with a smile.  As you’ll recall, last year’s CALL display was a big hit with everyone in Seattle. President’s Letter

This is the President’s letter for the Winter 2015 issue of the CALL Bulletin, and this year that appellation is surprisingly and painfully appropriate.  Winter has indeed come early.  But then so have changes and opportunities brought to our membership by the hard work of CALL members and committees.

CONELL at San Antonio

As I began to explore the idea of attending my first AALL Annual Meeting & Conference in San Antonio, many of my mentors informed me of the Conference of Newer Law Librarians (CONELL). My mentors shared their positive experiences and how they still remain in contact with the friends they met during CONELL.

I became increasingly excited about this unique opportunity to connect with other law librarians who shared the same stage in their career. CONELL typically takes place the Saturday before the conference begins and offers newer librarians the chance to meet the AALL Executive Board, and network and bond during a luncheon and afternoon tour of the hosting city.

During the conference, the CONELL attendees wore ribbons that signified their newer member status. While I was hesitant to declare my novice status, I was quickly relieved when shortly after donning the ribbon with my friends, a longtime member who was excited to welcome us stopped to chat with us. I instantly became proud to announce my newly acquired status as a newer member of AALL. Continue reading CONELL at San Antonio →

The Law Library Job Market

For those of us soon-to-be library school graduates, we are in the process of starting our careers and finding our first jobs. As a soon-to-be graduate myself, I wanted to find out more about the current status of the law library job market.

In order to do so, I interviewed both Roy Brooks, Career Specialist/Practicum Coordinator at the University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science, and Paul D. In February, Eloise retired from the Northwestern University School of Law’s Pritzker Legal Research Center after 25 years of service and active involvement in CALL, AALL, LLMC and LIPA.

Eloise has been a mentor to many librarians throughout her career; and many of her mentees attended the CALL luncheon when she was honored. She has always recognized the importance of maintaining strong connections between law libraries and the greater legal profession. Kip Kolkmeier: Advocate for Illinois Libraries

Those of us who attended the November CALL business meeting were given a treat when our featured speaker, Kip Kolkmeier, provided a rundown on the situation in Springfield. Kip summarized the many issues facing the legislature – not only the usual budget woes and redistricting fights, but the enormous unfunded pension obligation that looms over the state right now.
