Before heading off to library school at UIUC, I had the fortune to receive a summer internship at Chicago-Kent’s Law Library. I did not yet know I would later become a law librarian. For the summer, I worked on a special project in the library but was also invited to sit in on collection meetings, shadow the reference desk and generally glean knowledge from the great team of law librarians, one of whom was Lenore Glanz. I got to know Lenore’s kind heart, wealth of knowledge and guiding hand especially well because we sat near each other. I am so grateful for that seating chart.
When I returned from library school and found myself a new member of CALL, Lenore’s warm smile and welcome put me at ease. She pointed out familiar faces from Chicago Kent like Joe Mitzenmacher, Spencer Simons, Lucy Moss, Fred Barnes, and Gretchen Van Dam and introduced me to other law librarians in the CALL community. She helped me find my new community.
Lenore shared not only her knowledge of legal research and libraries with me, but she also taught me to continue to approach the world with an open mind and with a lot of questions. She demonstrated how to see situations from every vantage point in meetings. At CALL Business Meetings of the past, you likely witnessed those questions. We could all count on Lenore to ask a good question (or three) of the speakers. She would sometimes challenge them but always with kindness and grace.
And I should note that Lenore was not solely a law librarian. Though I know little about her personal life I do know that she adored the arts. Whenever we discussed weekend plans, she always had me beat. She was off to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, then something at Ravinia and most likely a lecture squeezed in between. I was so impressed with her energy and love for getting the most out of life that I have tried to model some of that myself to this day.
Thank you, Lenore. Without you, I do not think I would be where I am today.
