Law Librarian – New Year’s Resolutions
As we welcome the start of a new year, it’s a wonderful chance to reflect. Here are the areas I plan to focus on in the coming months.
Cautious Optimism for New Technology. It’s easy to become fatigued with AI and the avalanche of vendors promoting new features, but it can also be fun to try out new ideas and adopt the ones that work.
Double Checking Resources. Law librarians have always added value by evaluating the quality of information, and now that skill is more valuable than ever. There is no shortage of information or tools to find it, but the tough part is assessing both the tools and results. Our librarian superpower is vetting information from search results, whether they are from AI or other resources.
Breaking Out of the Proverbial Silo. When I learn about how other departments function, my work feels much more fulfilling. From marketing relying on competitive intelligence to develop new business, to docketing managing filings and deadlines, to accounting keeping finances in order- understanding how all these aspects interconnect helps me do my job more empathetically. An added benefit is learning about the unique challenges others encounter, which deepens my appreciation for my own role.
Embracing Some Analog. I love technology, learning new skills, and finding ways to be efficient, but I am more successful at it when I take a break. From reading a print book, knitting, to leaving my phone behind to walk in nature, walking away from screens is golden.
Connecting with Community. Connecting with other law librarians offers fresh perspectives, support in facing challenges, and a sense of belonging to a wider community.
