President’s Letter

Happy fall, CALL members!

In October, I had the pleasure of attending one day of the 2017 MAALL, LLAW, MichALL, MALL, and CALL Joint Annual Meeting up in Milwaukee. For a one-day visit, I managed to pack in some great networking and education. As usual, CALL was what made it really special. I presented a poster with fellow board member Scott Vanderlin, which we designed with CALL member Debbie Ginsberg and CALL Bulletin co-editor Emily Barney. I saw an excellent presentation from fellow board members Lindsey Carpino and Annie Mentkowski, and CALL Archives co-chair Clanitra Stewart Nejdl. I got to catch up with several other CALL members and reach out to members of the other regional associations. I am grateful to MAALL for giving CALL members the opportunity to participate in such a great event. Continue reading President’s Letter

Hello CALL members!

It’s time to go back to school! Law firms are losing those summer associates and gaining the associates who just took the bar. Court libraries will see new clerks and miss the old summer externs. Law schools are gearing up for another semester with new students, new faculty, and the same old questions about how to use the printers.

No matter where we work, the new school year brings CALL members exciting learning opportunities. Continue reading President’s Letter

Leadership Library

For this issue’s Leadership Library, I would like to recommend listening to a segment on The New Yorker Radio Hour dedicated to a unique book on leadership. Elizabeth Samet edited an anthology of readings on leadership. The anthology has an unusual range of authors (from Zadie Smith to Machiavelli), and that is because Samet is an unusual source of learning on leadership.  Continue reading Leadership Library

We Have Met the Leader and He Is Us: Recommending the AALL Leadership Academy and Reflecting on Lessons Learned

In early April, I had the privilege of attending the American Association of Law Libraries’ Leadership Academy. The most profound and interesting takeaway from the conference was the idea that we can all be leaders, even if we are not the boss.

The Library of International Relations

The Library of International Relations was established in 1932 on the basis of documents provided by the League of Nations Association. The original LIR was hosted in a room provided by the John Crerar Library and staffed by Miss Eloise G. ReQua, founder and first director of the Library of International Relations. Leadership Library

The CALL Mentorship and Leadership Development Committee is excited to introduce a new feature that we are calling the “Leadership Library”. The Committee was pleased to see so many members turn out for our leadership roundtable in January. It demonstrated that CALL members are committed to taking on strong leadership roles within their organizations, both in their places of employment and our professional associations. Our goal with this new column is to provide suggested readings to help you develop as a leader. Continue reading Leadership Library
