Chapman & Cutler wins In-House Publication Award

The winner of this year’s award for outstanding in-house publication is the Chapman & Cutler Research Services team.

They used a graphic of a book flipping open into a computer that was created by the firm’s marketing department and adapted it to make promotional logos for their events and newsletters.  They made attractive, professional-looking signs.

The Grants and Awards committee was especially impressed with their big Bingo card. Attorneys could complete some of the basic research and library tasks on the card to try to earn Bingo. Continue reading Chapman & Cutler wins In-House Publication Award

CALL Grants and Awards Committee 2018-2019 Annual Report

Committee members:  Clare Willis (chair), Sarah Andeen, Shari Duff, Debbie Ginsberg, Philip Johnson, Lyonette Louis-Jacques, Patricia Scott, and Beth Schubert.

The Committee had a very successful year.  We met once in person at the beginning of the year to discuss how we would monitor opportunities for continuing education opportunities and how we would publicize them to members.  This grew out of last year’s effort to let CALL members know about more continuing education opportunities beyond AALL. President’s Letter

Dear CALL members,

Thank you very much for an amazing year as your President. It has been an honor and a joy.  I mean that sincerely. For my final letter, I’d like to share with all of you the remarks that I gave at the last Business Meeting on May 10, 2018:

Not many of you know that we have a strategic planning committee mapping the future of CALL. Jean Wenger, chair of the committee, will tell you later how you can be a part of mapping that future. As part of that process, the committee wrote a new mission statement for CALL. It is: “CALL supports legal information professionals through advocacy, education, and engagement.” As we look back on this year, we can see how we have lived up to this mission statement and done amazing things. Happy fall, CALL members!

In October, I had the pleasure of attending one day of the 2017 MAALL, LLAW, MichALL, MALL, and CALL Joint Annual Meeting up in Milwaukee. For a one-day visit, I managed to pack in some great networking and education. As usual, CALL was what made it really special. I presented a poster with fellow board member Scott Vanderlin, which we designed with CALL member Debbie Ginsberg and CALL Bulletin co-editor Emily Barney. I saw an excellent presentation from fellow board members Lindsey Carpino and Annie Mentkowski, and CALL Archives co-chair Clanitra Stewart Nejdl. I got to catch up with several other CALL members and reach out to members of the other regional associations. I am grateful to MAALL for giving CALL members the opportunity to participate in such a great event. Continue reading President’s Letter

President’s Letter

Hello CALL members!

It’s time to go back to school! Law firms are losing those summer associates and gaining the associates who just took the bar. Court libraries will see new clerks and miss the old summer externs. Law schools are gearing up for another semester with new students, new faculty, and the same old questions about how to use the printers.

No matter where we work, the new school year brings CALL members exciting learning opportunities. Continue reading President’s Letter

Leadership Library

For this issue’s Leadership Library, I would like to recommend listening to a segment on The New Yorker Radio Hour dedicated to a unique book on leadership. Elizabeth Samet edited an anthology of readings on leadership. The anthology has an unusual range of authors (from Zadie Smith to Machiavelli), and that is because Samet is an unusual source of learning on leadership.  Continue reading Leadership Library

We Have Met the Leader and He Is Us: Recommending the AALL Leadership Academy and Reflecting on Lessons Learned

In early April, I had the privilege of attending the American Association of Law Libraries’ Leadership Academy. The most profound and interesting takeaway from the conference was the idea that we can all be leaders, even if we are not the boss.
