CALL Bulletin Coming Soon to a Database Near You . . .

It has taken nearly two years, but we are proud to announce that in late February the archive of the CALL Bulletin will be available on HeinOnline’s Law Library Shelf. The unveiling of the collection was timed to coincide with CALL’s 70th Anniversary. The archive dates back to 1952, and moving forward every new issue of the Bulletin will be added to the archive. Now, all of CALL’s good work will be show-cased to a wider audience.  Unfortunately, we are still missing the first eight issues of the Bulletin. If you happen to have copies, or suggestions for locating the missing copies, please contact Annie Mentkowski, CALL Historian, via email (annie.mentkowsi@rrb.gov).

Should you need another access point to the archive, the Hein project has not replaced the other CALL Bulletin archives. Digitized issued dating back to issue no. 178 (Fall 2000) will still be available on the CALL website.  And, the original print copies of the entire archive are housed at the David C. Shapiro Memorial Law Library at Northern Illinois University. Behind the Scenes at AALL – Grantee Report

This past meeting I had the privilege of serving on the local arrangements committee as the registration co-chair along with Joe Mitzenmacher. I was excited to help show off the Windy City to out-of-town AALL members from around the country, but I also had no idea about the level of detail that went into planning the annual meeting and I was a little bit nervous because event planning is not my forte. But, with Maribel Nash and Megan Butman leading the helm, we were in excellent hands and I had nothing to be nervous about. This report is intended to give you an idea of the work that goes into participating on a local arrangements committee. And it will hopefully encourage you to get involved in planning an association or chapter event, big or small—especially the upcoming 2017 MAALL meeting in Milwaukee (hint, hint).

Spring 2016, Bulletin

CALL Bulletin HeinOnline Update

We have been in contact with Dick Spinelli from HeinOnline. Mr. Spinelli has agreed that the CALL Bulletin would be a good fit for the Spinelli’s Law Library Reference Shelf.

We are hoping to get our CALL Bulletin content added to the Spinelli shelves by CALL’s 70th Anniversary in 2017. We have digitized issues back to no. 178, Fall 2000, and our archives, held at the NIU Law Library, have print issues going back to 1952.

We are currently in the process of gathering any missing issues for the archive. Specifically we are looking for the first ten issues. We plan on contacting Joyce Meyer at the AALL Archives. But, if you happen to have copies of those issues, please email Annie Mentkowski: amentkowski@niu.edu.

After all the issues are gathered, our next step is to organize them and to work with Hein to digitize them. We will be sure to keep CALL involved during this process.

MAALL 2015 Program – Everything’s Up to Date: Preparing Practice-Ready Students

On October 22, 2015, Lindsey Carpino and Annie Mentkowski presented “Everything’s Up to Date:  Preparing Practice-Ready Law Students.”  (The inaugural CALL “What’s Buzzin’?” brown bag event functioned as the dress rehearsal for their MAALL 2015 presentation – if interested, the summary of the notes are here). The MAALL presentation can be viewed in its entirety here.

The structure of the MAALL program allowed for the presenters and attendees to foster a dialogue about the research skills and abilities librarians observe on a day-to-day basis when interacting with newly licensed attorneys. The session included a great mix of firm, government, and academic librarians, and at least one research vendor representative.

What’s Buzzin’?

What’s Buzzin?, a new brown bag series designed to foster more collaborative relationships between firm, government and academic librarians debuted on September 11, 2015, at DLA Piper.  This was the first of what is sure to be many informal discussions and exchanges of ideas among CALL colleagues.  Julie Pabarja, Lindsey Carpino and Annie Mentkowski led the inaugural discussion.  And, a special “thank you” to Diana Koppang who volunteered to take notes.
