2019 Recap: Mentoring & Leadership Development Events

The Mentorship and Leadership Development Committee (MLDC) has been busy!  Here is some of the great work already completed by the Committee:

  • MDLC launched a new page on the CALL website under Members Information – this page includes upcoming events, the mentorship form, key contacts and more.
  • The Professional Development Encouragement subcommittee (Lyonette Louis-Jacques and Sarah Andeen) is currently compiling and completing a database of CALL member publications (and forthcoming publications).  Please send any contributions you can to the subcommittee so CALL can recognize your terrific work!  You can find more information at the CALL MLDC website.
  • The subcommittee has also been busy organizing the upcoming opportunities for CALL members to take advantage of in the new  MDLC calendar.
  • Don’t forget to apply for a CALL grant.

Modern Mentorship

The Mentorship and Leadership Development Committee (MDLC) recently hosted a mentorship brown bag event at Chicago-Kent College of Law on Thursday, January 24, 2019.

With the demands of work, professional development, and our personal lives, it can be challenging to add mentorship to your task list. Because of this, we decided to invite our newer CALL members to an informal mentorship event where we could share our insights and take questions over lunch and cookies.

Mentoring New Members

This approach was successful. Our new members were able to get their questions answered and start forming bonds with some of our CALL leaders. Additionally, they now associate names with faces for the next business meeting.

Some of the questions included revolved around the best committees for new CALL members to ease into involvement, and we encouraged Bulletin writing. Also, there were questions about where to find conferences and how to apply for grants – the MDLC calendar where our members can find this information. Continue reading Modern Mentorship →

Leadership Library

For this issue’s Leadership Library, I would like to recommend listening to a segment on The New Yorker Radio Hour dedicated to a unique book on leadership. Elizabeth Samet edited an anthology of readings on leadership. The anthology has an unusual range of authors (from Zadie Smith to Machiavelli), and that is because Samet is an unusual source of learning on leadership.  Continue reading Leadership Library →

We Have Met the Leader and He Is Us: Recommending the AALL Leadership Academy and Reflecting on Lessons Learned

In early April, I had the privilege of attending the American Association of Law Libraries’ Leadership Academy. The most profound and interesting takeaway from the conference was the idea that we can all be leaders, even if we are not the boss.

The CALL Mentorship and Leadership Development Committee is excited to introduce a new feature that we are calling the “Leadership Library”. The Committee was pleased to see so many members turn out for our leadership roundtable in January. It demonstrated that CALL members are committed to taking on strong leadership roles within their organizations, both in their places of employment and our professional associations. After attending the “CALLing Future Leaders” event on Thursday, January 28, 2016 at DLA Piper, I had some key takeaways. Keith Ann Stiverson was the Keynote speaker. The panel discussion was moderated by Clare Gaynor Willis. The panel was made up of: Gretchen Van Dam, Lyonette Louis-Jacques, Robert Martin, and Julie Pabarja. February 2015 Business Meeting Round-Up

CALL held its third Business Meeting of the year at Morton’s Steakhouse, 65 E. Wacker Place, on February 26, 2015.  President Margaret Schilt called the meeting to order at noon and praised the Meetings Committee for finding a great new venue.  Margaret welcomed one new CALL member, Peter Kaiser from Bloomberg BNA.
